New DPS Trooper has local connection

Newly minted DPS Trooper Shane Stevenson, graduated with the March 28, Trooper class. Stevenson is a 2000 graduate of Dalhart, Texas High, and a six-year Air Force Veteran. 

While waiting to be accepted as a Trooper, Stevenson had worked for Frontier Fuel in Dalhart.

Stevenson is the son of Beth and Russ Varner of Dalhart, and the late Mark Stevenson, of Boise City. His grandparents are Foy and Ruby Tharp, of Amarillo, Texas.

The new Trooper attended a 28-week training academy beginning in Sept. 2007. More than 100 different subjects are covered including counter-terrorism, traffic and criminal law, arrest and control procedures, accident reconstruction, first aid and Spanish.

They also took lessons in use of force, communication skills, firearms, driving, criminal interdiction, cultural diversity, and physical fitness.

The new academy graduates will move to their new duty stations in about three-weeks, and Stevenson will move to Paris, Texas, northeast of Dallas.
